Have you noticed the shifting weather patterns we’ve been having lately? One day it’s pleasant summer weather and then in the blink of an eye it’s shifted to cold rain that seems much more suited to late fall. You’d almost think that summer had come and gone, but then it’s back. This crazy weather is increasing the risk of summer colds in many states, including New York, this year.
Weather Patterns Increasing Summer 2015 Colds?
Every summer seems to bring with it a certain number of people who get affected by the summer cold virus, but so far 2015 seems be a particularly challenging one. The variations in temperature only seem to be making this type of health issue worse.
While the weather itself is not to blame for people getting sick, getting caught outside wearing the wrong clothing for the temperature will make your immune system more susceptible to catching a virus. Unfortunately, with the rapid temperature changes we’ve been seeing recently, it has often been difficult to dress appropriately for a full day’s worth of weather when leaving the house in the morning.
If you put on light clothing in the morning thinking the temperature will warm up though the day, you run the risk of being caught in a storm where the rain is quite cold. You could end up thoroughly soaked and chilled by the time you get home, which creates an opening for you to get sick if you happen to be exposed to a cold virus at around the same time.
How To Treat A Summer Cold
What should you do if you are unfortunate enough to come down with a summer cold this year? The best way to cope with a summer cold is exactly the same strategy that you would use to treat a winter one.
- Rest in bed and drink plenty of fluids. You won’t be able to fight off the virus unless you allow your body to get some extra sleep.
- Wash your hands often. Keep a bottle of hand sanitizer with you for times when you don’t have access to soap and water.
- Treat your symptoms with over-the-counter remedies, such as decongestants, pain relievers and throat lozenges.
